The Complacency of God's People - Part 2
(the LORD speaking to His people through Amos)
You put off the evil day
and bring near a reign of terror.
You lie on beds inlaid with ivory
and lounge on your couches.
You dine on choice lambs
and fattened calves.
You strum away on your harps like David
and improvise on musical instruments.
You drink wine by the bowlful
and use the finest lotions,
but you do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph.
Therefore you will be among the first to go into exile;
your feasting and lounging will end.
Amos 6:3-7 (NIV)
Failing to deal sober-mindedly
with sin ("the evil day"), and living for the hedonistic moment, only
ushers in an ultimate "reign of terror" at the last day.
Following my own natural inclinations, I will languish in

conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.
But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do;
for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."
Since you call on a Father who judges each man's work impartially,
live your lives as strangers here in reverent fear. For you know
that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that
you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you
from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a
lamb without blemish or defect.
Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that
you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply,
from the heart. For you have been born again, not of perishable
seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of

Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
